They all still had the protective plastic
on the cutting edges when I found them; I peeled it off one for the
picture.
PLUGS & DOWELS
101
OK, what we need to know is the difference between a dowel and a
plug.
A dowel is a long piece of birch wood turned down to a cylinder.
The tree grew up the dowel and the grain comes out the end.
Dowels
are very strong for holding furniture together. This is
good. When you use them for plugging a hole with an ugly metal
fastener inside it, you see the endgrain, which holds too much stain
and looks darker than the rest of the furniture, or from which the
paint falls off, so it looks worse than the rest of the
furniture. Not good. Also, who builds birch
furniture? It doesn't match.
With a plug cutter, you grab a board that matches the furniture and
make a dowel-shaped plug, except that the top of the plug -- the part
you have to live with -- is just like the rest of the board.
A plug is easier to shape and paint than a dowel, because the growth
layers (the "grain") run the same way in the plug as in the rest of the
furniture.
OK, I didn't do this plug, but if you don't keep a leaking aquarium on
your table for 5 years and rust everything inside the hole, you can use
plugs to hide fasteners. For ex, we hung a mirror on the bedroom
wall a couple of residences ago by making a pine frame for it and
plugging the holes used to screw the frame to the wall -- a very clean
look, we were pleased. We cut the plugs from the wood left over
from the frame, so we could never find them again. Can't show you
a photo, we sold it with the house.
Thanks for looking,

PAYMENT
PayPal is OK, but . . . PayPal makes
it
difficult for
buyers to avoid "credit card" fees even if credit is extended to
nobody. If I
have any savings, I'll pass them on. Deduct 50 cents from sale
price
for
payment by money order, account-to-account transfers into PayPal
account "jerry-VA at
prodigy.net" (go to PayPal "Send Money"), or
personal check, but checks must wait to clear. Combine 3 wins, deduct $1.50.
You must have a positive cash
balance to make an account-to-account transfer to a PayPal e-mail
address.
If you would
like to pay by
check, kindly email me to say a check is coming when you drop your
payment into
the mail -- otherwise communications fall silent and it
looks like nothing's happening.
No shipments to unconfirmed addresses. Please get your address
verified before sending payment. UPS will not deliver to a Post
Office Box -- please give me a street address. Somehow, this all
seemed easier not so long ago.
Payment is expected within 3
days. After 3 days we still want to
hear from you, but we may re-list the item. eBay non-paying bidder
policy applies after 7 days. Returns only within 10 days; buyer
pays shipping. We look forward to earning your positive
feedback.
eBay is raising rates for the
fourth year in a row this February. Shipping and Handling costs
will rise for you and me to partially offset the fees for photos,
running the ad, completing the auction, transferring the money -- death
by a thousand cuts.
SHIPPING
is $5.07 to any Zip Code in
the US. Domestic shipments are
delivery-confirmed. No international
shipping. Canadians, you need to combine other purchases and get
up into the UPS weight range.
COMBINED SHIPMENTS: Write me (jerry-VA@prodigy.net)
before paying if you
win more than one auction, so that I can invoice you for a lower
amount. A little trouble by both of us to get shipments combined is
worth
it. For
example, two 2 lb 7 oz boxes ship as 6 lbs total for $17.10 across the
country, but as one 5 lb box for $12.15. Write to me first,
pay
later -- I need to invoice you with the lower costs.
Low start price, no reserve,
honest shipping. INSURANCE Optional insurance to any USA
address: $1 per $50 on small items going 1st Class or
Priority
(less than USPS). I will
refund full
cost including shipping (USPS does not) if item is lost in transit (no
tracking confirmation or no delivery confirmation) or damaged in
shipping. Buyer agrees to provide proof of damage or statement of
non-receipt (for my tax records). Be alert. If the
carrier delivers
but you don't bring it in before it disappears, there is no
compensation for either of us. ------------------------------------------------------------
