New Camera

Our not very old Fuji Fine-pix 810 is broken. The LCD broke sometime in the first few weeks of our being in Japan. We could still take pictures, but couldn’t see them until we transferred them to the computer and we couldn’t make any adjustments–forced flash for example. Then just after Lisa, Ben, and Sophia arrived the pictures began coming out with lines and having light problems. It got to the point that the camera was not usable. So we bought a new camera. We liked the size of Lisa and Ben’s Canon Digital IXUS (Powershot Digital ELPH in the USA) and the picture quality so we bought one–the Canon IXY Digital 60 which is called the Canon Digital IXUS 55 in Europe and the Canon Powershot SD450 Digital ELPH in the USA.

One of its features is to take a series of shots and stitch them together. I did this from our Balcony and the result is here. To view it copy the URL below into a browser.

Neat. Does the camera itself stitch the shots together or is it done on the computer afterwards?

The image link in the blog post isn’t working. I think it’s because it has the address of the gallery page rather than of just the thumbnail image (which is http://www.nerdylorrin.net/albums/October-2005/From_our_balcony_in_Tokyo.sized.jpg)

Oops. Fixed now. Thanks Lorrin. The camera takes the pitures and puts them in a folder. Software on the computer stitches them.

    Dear Karen and David,

I love reading your entries. What a treat to have Lisa, Ben and Sochan come to visit you all. I would love to go spend a few ours at the baths. This is an experience that most Americans cannot even begin to understand! Communal bathing is good for the spirit. I got introduced to it in California when I was in Grad school. But it was not really a real municipal, affordable experience.

Things are going well over at our house, and it is still Indian summer here. However, I am thinking of weatherizing our windows for real this time. Apparently heating will go up 50 to 75% this winter. This is truly a stick-up by the oil companies.

The Juniper and Camilia are looking just great, as you must have seen in the pictures. Konrad and I will be going to Florida for Thanksgiving. I am a bit disappointed because the beach cabin we reserved at Bahia Honda state park is out of service due to hurricane damage. Oh well…

    I miss you tremendously.

    Magali
